Top-seller: Pokémon Black/White 2 – 1,561,738

Nintendo 3DS sales: 68,056 | Total sales: 6,352,597

PlayStation Vita sales: 13,589 | Total sales: 779,103

Who would ever have guessed it—Pokémon Black/White 2 were the best-selling games in Japan last week. The two companion games were released on Saturday, as is usually the case with Pokémon titles, meaning that only two days of sales are represented in this week’s chart. Despite this, Black/White 2 topped the sales chart at a nice 1.56 million copies sold.

For comparison, here are the opening sales of the previous Pokémon games on the Nintendo DS:

Pokémon Black/White (2010) – 2.55 million

Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver (2009) – 1.44 million

Pokémon Platinum (2008) – 963,273

Pokémon Diamond/Pearl (2006) – 1.58 million

All said and done, Pokémon Black/White 2 sold about on par with Diamond/Pearl in their opening weekend. Not too shabby at all, and based on past trends, they should continue to sell for quite some time.

Meanwhile, Persona 4: Golden dropped from its top spot to the #3 position on the chart. PlayStation Vita sales plummeted as well, now back to 13,600 units for the week, following the brief boost the system received from Persona’s release. Perhaps next week’s Crystal White-coloured Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection will provide some brief respite, but following that, the system will be devoid of high-profile games until Hatsune Miku Project Diva f releases in late August.
