<< Last week’s software sales chart

Last week, The Pokémon Company released Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the Nintendo 3DS worldwide. Worldwide, the game sold 4 million copies in two days. Of those 4 million copies, 1.86 million were sold in Japan at retail.

For the sake of comparison, 2010’s Pokémon Black/White sold 2.55 million in its opening week in Japan. Something to note, however, is that X and Y were released in four territories—U.S., Europe, Japan and Korea—all on the same day, which means Nintendo had to spread their shipments out. Had they shipped more copies of the games to Japan, Pokémon X and Y would likely have sold more than they did.

(For those that were placing bets—yes, Pokémon outsold Monster Hunter 4’s launch sales of 1.71 million in Japan.)

Other notable games released during the week included Grand Theft Auto V, which had a fantastic opening at 360,000 copies sold on PlayStation 3. Meanwhile, Namco Bandai’s Tales of Symphonia Chronicles sold 77,228 copies—more or the less the same amount that the Tales of the Abyss port sold on Nintendo 3DS in its first week.

Also released last week was Compile Heart’s Fairy Fencer F, and despite suggestions from retail that the game was poised to perform well, Fairy Fencer F sold just 40,000 copies in its first week—not much higher than Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk-2’s opening of 33,000 sold at launch. It looks like Compile Heart still have some work to do.

Finally, Sony released the PlayStation Vita 2000 model last week as well, in a multitude of new colours, which gave the system a boost for the week. Accompanying the new Vita revision was Danganronpa 1 & 2 Reload, with 76,000 copies sold.
