Last week, Level 5 released Yo-kai Watch 2 in Japan, and Japanese sales tracker Media Create reports that the game sold a whopping 1.3 million copies in its first week on store shelves.

To put this in perspective, Yo-kai Watch 2 has actually outsold the original Yo-Kai Watch in a single week. The first game currently sits at 1.19 million, and continues to sell consistently every week.

Yo-kai Watch 2 was released in two versions—Head and Founder, similar to the way Level 5 adopted the dual-release strategy with Inazuma Eleven once that franchise had taken off. It was a smart move, and one that looks to have worked out well.

3DS hardware sales saw an increase due to the release of the game, as well as the release of a limited edition Yo-kai Watch-themed Nintendo 3DS XL system, which was made available this past weekend.

Meanwhile, Sony released two new PlayStation Vita “Super Value Pack” bundles this past weekend, containing an 8GB memory card and an assortment of free-to-play software, which led to increased sales of the Vita hardware as well.
