This week marks the first week of the holiday season in December, meaning we’ll see a spike in software and hardware sales in Japan, among other interesting figures. Key new releases include Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters Edition, and Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version as far as big names go.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam sits in 2nd place this week, having sold 49,226 units. While 2nd place might not sound like a bad deal, the sales figure would be considered a bit on the lower end if you compare it to the last Mario & Luigi or Paper Mario titles.

When Paper Mario: Sticker Star first released in Japan in December 2012, it sold 129,054 units in its first week. Meanwhile, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team sold 99,972 units in its debut week. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam combines the two popular series for the first time, but things didn’t go as expected, which reminds me a bit of what happened with Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, which also released during the holiday season a few years back with similar results for the series.

Yo-kai Watch Dance: Just Dance Special Version saw merely 7,060 units sold in its first week, making it the worst-selling game with the Yo-kai Watch brand attached to it. While you can say that Level-5 tried something different with this one, its first-week sales numbers were a bit too low, even for a Wii U game, let alone a Yo-kai Watch game. However, Yo-kai Watch Busters is still selling well, and we can expect it to continue doing so for the rest of the month.

Monster Hunter X, on the other hand, continues to sell well with 332,478 units sold this past week. Capcom mentioned earlier this summer that they expect the title to sell 2.5 million units, and at the rate it’s going, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the title pass the goal in another week or two, especially with the extra holiday boost.
