Last week, Japan saw only three releases but they were major ones in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and Atelier Firis: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Journey. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker Media Create’s data on video game software and hardware that sold from the week of October 31 through November 6, 2016.

At #1 we have Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare make its debut with 105,764. Here’s a look at how it stacks compared to first-week performances of recent titles from the franchise:

  • (2013) Call of Duty: Ghosts – 203,581 (190,631 – PS3|12,950 – X360)
  • (2014) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – 147,376 (64,060 – PS4|79,586 – PS3)
  • (2015) Call of Duty: Black Ops III – 164,716 (143,817 – PS4|20,899 – PS3)
  • (2016) Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare 105,764 – PS4

It’s pretty evident that the number of Call of Duty sales are slipping compared to previous installments, and while it might not be hitting those 200k numbers as it has in the past with Ghosts, Black Ops II, and Modern Warfare 3, the number is still pretty impressive for Infinite Warfare. Looking at the sales we’ve seen for shooters in Japan lately shows that it’s still a common misconception that the Japanese aren’t fond of shooters.

Next at #2 we have Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 with 66,035 copies sold on PS4 for its debut. That’s a little less than what it’s predecessor, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, managed to sell in its debut of 78,911 between PS4 (34,690) and PS3 (44,221).

And for our third new title of the week, we have Gust’s latest in the Atelier series with Atelier Firis: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Journey, which placed #3 with 27,372 units sold on PS4 and #5 with 16,153 units sold on PS3 for its debut with a combined total of 43,525 copies.

  • (2013) Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky – 57,550
  • (2014) Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea – 43,744
  • (2015) Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book – 68,106
  • (2016) Atelier Firis: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Journey – 43,525

The above is a look at how it stacks compared to the combined totals of recent main Atelier games. Atelier Firis performed with similar debuting numbers to what we saw in Atelier Shallie. Keep in mind that the series has seen several remakes, ports, and side games along with the main releases listed above, which may have oversaturated the Atelier market in recent years. Gust previously shared a tongue-in-cheek comment that they would die without Atelier, but it looks like they may have to rethink its formula for the future in order to rise.

On the hardware front, we saw an increase by about 2,000 for PS4, and a nice bump for the New 3DS LL by almost 5,000. The rest stayed about the same, and the Xbox One went from 335 the week prior to 181 this week.
