Last week, Japan was still feeling the effects of the recently released hits of Dragon Quest XI and Splatoon 2, along with the release of The Great Ace Attorney 2 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Japanese sales tracker Media Create shared the latest on software and hardware sales data from the week of July 31 through August 6, 2017.

The #1 and #2 spots go to Dragon Quest XI again with the 3DS version selling 307,714 units and the PS4 version selling 200,798 units for a combined total of 508,512 units on the week. This puts its total at 2,607,714 units sold. The game has now passed Dragon Quest II’s life-to-date sales of 2.4 million and we’ll likely see it pass the original Dragon Quest V’s LTD sales of 2.8 million next week.

The bronze medal goes to Splatoon 2 again, with a total of 74,235 units sold for Switch, putting it at a total of 827,646 units sold. We should see it hit the million units milestone sometime in the coming weeks.

The first new title of the week is The Great Ace Attorney 2 at #4 with 69,848 units sold on the Nintendo 3DS. This is quite a drop from your average numbers for an Ace Attorney title, but it doesn’t come off as much of a surprise after considering that it is a sequel to a spinoff.

Here’s how its debut compares to previous spinoff titles from the series:

  • (2009) Ace Attorney Investigations – 171,940 [NDS]
  • (2011) Ace Attorney Investigations 2 – 132,266 [NDS]
  • (2012) Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney – 128,865 [3DS]
  • (2015) The Great Ace Attorney – 135,690 [3DS]
  • (2017) The Great Ace Attorney 2 – 69,848 [3DS]

Now here’s a look at the debuting numbers from Ace Attorney’s main-numbered series:

  • (2005) Ace Attorney – 64,570 [NDS]
  • (2006) Ace Attorney 2 – 23,503 [NDS]
  • (2007) Ace Attorney 3 – 56,787 [NDS]
  • (2007 ) Ace Attorney 4 – 250,186 [NDS]
  • (2013) Ace Attorney 5 – 250,216 [3DS]
  • (2016) Ace Attorney 6 – 196,381 [3DS]

As you can see, the numbers for the main-numbered titles have also been seeing a bit of a fall. It’s safe to say that one of the big reasons for the decline is due to the Ace Attorney games being more or less the same without any big or exciting changes. While the series continues to appeal to its current fans, we’re not seeing much else being done to expand beyond that.

At #5 we have Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy that made its debut with 30,384 units sold on PlayStation 4. Last but not least, Ace Attorney makes another appears, this time with the limited edition pack that features both Great Ace Attorney games, which sold 9,651 units to chart at #8.

Hardware sales aren’t nearly as high compared to big splash last week with release of Dragon Quest XI, but we can still see its ripples with relatively high hardware sales figures with 43,862 PS4 sales, 33,871 for the New 2DSLL and 22,200 for the New 3DS LL. The Nintendo Switch was the top-selling hardware of the week with 61,933 units sold, which now puts it at 1,347,232 units sold in Japan since launch going by Media Create’s numbers.
