<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, Japan saw several releases with Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 on PS4 and PS3, Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, F1 2017, and Champion Jockey Special on Nintendo Switch. Japanese sales tracker Media Create shared the latest on software and hardware sales data from the week of September 11 through September 17, 2017.

At #1 we have Pro Evolution Soccer which sold 64,342 units on PS4. Its PS3 version sold 12,777 units for #7 of the week. This time last year, PES 2017 sold 66,037 units on its debut for PS4 and 34,502 units for the PS3 version.

Splatoon 2 charted at #2 for the fourth week straight with 37,481 units sold on the Nintendo Switch.

At #3 we have Metroid: Samus Returns, the 2.5D remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus, which opened with 30,855 units sold on the Nintendo 3DS. Metroid games usually sell in lower numbers in Japan compared to Nintendo’s bigger series so you won’t be seeing it open with the six-digit debuts we might see from Nintendo’s bigger franchises. To give you an idea, the last traditional Metroid game Metroid: Zero Mission sold a life-to-date total of 58,546 units in Japan for Game Boy Advance back in 2004.

Other new titles of the week includes Uncharted: The Lost Legacy with 23,131 units sold on PS4 to chart at #4, F1 2017 came in #11 with 7,190 copies sold on PS4, and Champion Jockey Special was in last place of the top-20 with 2,626 units sold on the Nintendo Switch.

Hardware sales remained mostly the same with PlayStation 4 Pro numbers going back to normal after seeing a spike in sales from the Glacier White model that released the week prior. The Nintendo Switch was on top again with 44,052 units sold in the week.  Going by Media Create’s numbers, the Nintendo Switch has sold a total of 1,666,526 units in Japan since its launch in March.
