Last week, Japan saw the release of two major titles with Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Earth Defense Force 5 that helped bolster PlayStation 4 sales, while Nintendo Switch continues its tremendous sales figures. Other new titles include Kamen Rider: Climax Fighters, Dead Rising 4: Frank’s Big Package, Sumikko Gurashi: Summiko Park e Youkoso, Nioh: Complete Edition, and Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest software and hardware sales data from the week of December 4 through December 10, 2017.

The #1 of the week goes to Yakuza Kiwami 2, the PlayStation 4 remake of Yakuza 2, with 131,931 units sold in its debut. Here’s a look at how it stacks compared to other Yakuza titles going back to Yakuza 4:

  • (2010) Yakuza 4 – 383,972 [PS3]
  • (2011) Yakuza: Dead Souls – 307,019 [PS3]
  • (2012) Yakuza 5 – 356,757 [PS3]
  • (2014) Yakuza Restoration/Ishin – 220,698 [PS4/PS3]
  • (2015) Yakuza 0 – 236,329 [PS4/PS3]
  • (2016) Yakuza Kiwami – 163,683 [PS4/PS3]
  • (2016) Yakuza 6 – 218,168 [PS4]
  • (2017) Yakuza Kiwami 2 – 131,931 [PS4]

The debut of Yakuza Kiwami 2 might be the lowest the series has seen, but it’s about expected when you consider it being the first standalone PS4 title that’s not a new main entry, while its remake predecessor Yakuza Kiwami sold 163,683 units with 60,427 coming from PS3 sales.

At #2 we have Earth Defense Force 5 with 111,075 units sold on PlayStation 4. The previous entry, Earth Defense Force 2025 sold 154,689 units on PS3 and 23,371 on PS Vita for a total of 178,060 units.

Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon charted at #3 with 106,094 units sold. The games are now at 1,050,168 units sold (or 1,340,317 units if you include the Double Pack as a single SKU). Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 continue with strong sales going #4 and #5 with 95,816 and 50,594 units sold, respectively, on Switch.

As far as other new titles go, Rising 4: Frank’s Big Package charted at #11 with 13,029 units sold on PS4, Sumikko Gurashi: Sumikko Park e Youkoso placed #16 with 9,435 units sold on Switch, Nioh: Complete Edition finished #18 with 8,021 units sold on PS4, and lastly we have Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition at #20 with 7,309 units sold on PS4.

On the hardware front, we saw some big spikes in PlayStation 4 sales with the PS4 going from 25,163 the week prior to 40,524. The PS4 Pro also enjoyed a sweet 45,163 units sold after selling 8,244 units a week earlier. The Nintendo Switch continues to dominate the console market in Japan with a whopping 164,908 units sold in the week, putting the total number of Nintendo Switch consoles sold in Japan at 2,685,935 units since its launch in March, according to Media Create’s data. We can expect to see  high hardware and software sales for the next coming weeks with the holiday season in full throttle.
