Last week, Japan saw the biggest week in sales of the year on the last week before Christmas, where we also saw new releases in The Idolmaster: Stella Stage, Atelier Lydie & Suelle, Okami HD, and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 Deluxe Edition. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest software and hardware sales data from the week of December 18 through December 24, 2017.

Super Mario Odyssey was the winner of the big week with 209,630 units sold to take the #1 spot. Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 followed its second week at #2 with 184,739 units sold on 3DS. Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon saw another #3 for the third week in a row with 176,789 units sold on the 3DS.

At #4 we have Splatoon 2 with 137,607 units sold on Switch, followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 100,205 units sold on Switch to complete a top-5 with over 100,000 units sold. Most of the best-selling titles of the week consisted of Switch titles, including some that were in the bottom half of the list in previous weeks, showing that a variety of titles like ARMS and Pokkén Tournament DX were picked up by new Switch-owners.

The first new release of the week is The Idolmaster: Stella Stage at #10 with 23,772 units sold on PS4, a big drop from its predecessor The Idolmaster: Platinum Stars that opened with 76,165 units on PS4 in August 2016.

Next up, we have Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings at #13 with 21,129 units sold on PS4. You can check out how it compares to other more recent main entry Atelier games:

  • (2013) Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky – 57,550
  • (2014) Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea – 43,744
  • (2015) Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book – 68,106
  • (2016) Atelier Firis: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Journey – 43,525
  • (2017) Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings – 21,129*

It’s worth noting that the number accounts for only sales from the PS4 version of the game as the Nintendo Switch and PS Vita versions didn’t chart. Considering how high #20 is at 15,916 during the busy Christmas week, the other two versions might’ve sold more than expected, but we’ll get a better idea how it performed after the full numbers are out.

And lastly, two other titles released during the week with Okami HD at #18 with 16,536 units sold on PS4 and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 Deluxe Edition at #19 with 16,011 units sold on Switch.

Hardware sales are always big around this time of year, and this year’s was exceptionally big with it being the first holiday season for the Nintendo Switch, which sold 269,684 units to surpass the 3 million milestone at 3,176,829 units sold in Japan since its March launch, going by Media Create’s data. The Switch’s total sales of the week accounted for 62.4% of all hardware sales of the week. The New Nintendo 2DS LL and 3DS LL both saw a large increase as well as the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita compared to the week prior.
