Last week, Japanese sales tracker Media Create and many others were on a New Year’s break, but now they’re back and we have the sales numbers for the final week of 2017, which only saw a single new release in Mario Party: The Top 100 on 3DS during the week of December 25 through December 31, 2017.

Nintendo practically dominated the sales chart to close out 2017. To put things into perspective, only three titles in the top-20 weren’t either a Switch or 3DS title. For starters, Super Mario Odyssey had a strong finish in 2017 with 105,051 units sold on Switch to take #1. Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also showed that they belong on top after respectively selling 96,404 and 87,356 units to chart at #2 and #3. Meanwhile, Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon continued to shine at #4 with 61,698 units sold on 3DS.

The first and only new release to make the top-20 of the week was Mario Party: The Top 100, which sold 52,181 units on 3DS to place #5. This actually almost doubled the sales of the previous Mario Party game, Mario Party: Star Rush, which debuted with 26,473 units back in October 2016. While the sales figure might be a bit inflated due to the holiday season, it’s still impressive to see Mario Party come back with some sales, especially considering its past few entries had subpar performances in sales.

There were a few noteworthy titles that made its way back into the list, starting with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 which didn’t even chart in the top-20 the previous week at #22 but has since then climbed back to #12 with 12,779 units sold on Switch. It’s safe to assume that a bunch of the sales came from people who got Switches for Christmas and decided to purchase the RPG afterwards. Yakuza Kiwami 2 also climbed from #23 the week before to #13 with 11,806 units sold on PS4. The same for Call of Duty: WWII which went from #30 the week prior to #14 with 10,153 units sold on PS4. I also thought it was interesting seeing FIFA 18’s Switch version chart at #16 with 9,131 units.

As for the hardware sales figures, the you might see significant drops across all platforms. This is due to Christmas week being the biggest of the year for hardware, but we’ll likely continue seeing higher numbers for the next few weeks as the Japanese tend to keep spending during the month of January with leftover bonuses and Otoshidama. The top-selling console of the week was the Nintendo Switch with 134,519 units sold in Japan, taking 58.6% of all hardware sales. This now puts the Switch at 3,311,348 units sold in Japan since the console’s launch in March 2017.
