Best Avowed Backgrounds Worth Using in Character Creation

Avowed is a smaller-scale fantasy RPG, but it doesn’t fail to deliver on the customizable protagonist department at least. The robust character creator even includes backgrounds for you to pick from that determine your character’s backstory. Here are the best Avowed backgrounds you should consider during character creation.

All Avowed Backgrounds, Explained

There are five different backgrounds you can choose from at the start of the game. Arcane Scholar is someone who mastered the magical side of the world and earned the Emperor’s notice. Court Augur is someone with clairvoyance who fled their town and found comfort working the courts of the Emperor. Then there is the Noble Scion, which involves growing up a noble but losing one’s family.

The Vanguard Scout is essentially someone who grew up in the wilderness and was rescued by the Emperor. Finally, the War Hero is someone who proved themselves on the battlefield and earned their fame. Each of the five backgrounds not only changes the dialogue options you have and how people treat you, but your starting weapon as well.

Best Avowed Backgrounds

Part of figuring out which of the Avowed backgrounds is best for you is taking a look at the starting weapons:

  • Arcane Scholar: Dagger
  • Court Augur: Mace
  • Noble Scion: Sword
  • Vanguard Scout: Axe
  • War Hero: Spear

This choice matters little, as your stats and weapons aren’t restricted by your background. In fact, I wouldn’t even think of this as your traditional class in other RPGs. You can pick whatever weapon and stats you want throughout the adventure. As such, I highly recommend just picking your background based on roleplaying and which one resonates most with you.

To me, the most impressive and distinct backgrounds are the Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, and Noble Scion. Each offer a fascinating backstory that offers some intriguing dialogue options and responses from characters.

Avowed is available right now for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
