Best Civ VII Civilizations Worth Using

Civilization VII features dozens of different civilizations for you to choose from. This time around, your location and nation is not completely tied to your leader. So, this also makes the game a bit more overwhelming in terms of figuring out which nation to pick. Fortunately, I have my recommendations for the best civilizations in Civ VII for each Age.

Best Age of Antiquity Civilizations in Civ VII

The Age of Antiquity is a tough situation since it largely depends on what type of victory you want to go for. That said, when it comes to making the best civilizations in each Age, I’m going for more balanced, well-rounded civilizations. In this case, I would go with Aksum. This is an incredible civilization with how much Gold and Production it gives you, which is worthwhile for every type of player.

Here are the leader characters I’d pair with Aksum:

  • Amina
  • Benjamin Franklin
  • Xerxes, King of Kings

Best Age of Exploration Civilizations

When it comes to the Age of Exploration, the civilization I would recommend is Spain. Once again, the additional Gold and Production is what you want if you are going for a truly balanced style that is possible with every setup or playstyle.

Here are the leaders I’d suggest you take a look at if you would like to play with Spain as your civilization:

  • Amina
  • Augustus
  • Ibn Battuta

Best Modern Age Civilizations

The Modern Age is by far the most important Age in all of Civ VII. This is where you have the end of the match and the ultimate victory. This is why it is so crucial you pick a civilization like America. It is the ultimate goldmine in this particular Age and you get plenty of Production, which will help with certain buildings. Plus, its unique units and buildings are incredible.

The leaders you should pair with America including the following:

  • Amina
  • Xerxes, King of Kings
  • Jose Rizal

Civilization VII releases for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 11, 2025. It is currently available in Early Access.
