There are a lot of different types of characters you can create in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero, and it might be hard to decide which ones are the best to constantly include in your assaults. While many of them can be situational and there are really no “bad” units in the game, I found there are five ones (or types) that you should always try to deploy.
Pretty much any named campaign character
The characters who actually join Marona throughout the story in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero are the best. They tend to have unique skills and abilities! They might have higher stats than usual! They’ll join at a high level on par with your other characters, so you don’t need to use the Juice Bar or level grind to make them good. They might even have passives that mean they work well together, like Apricot and Rouen. Make sure campaign characters are always brought along for the ride! Honestly, since quite a few of them are melee units, I found them more helpful for physical damage than other generic units I created like the Angler, Thief, or Fighter.
Wizard
Mages remain good in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero and some of the best characters, just like in other NIS America games. Now, the Witch and Wizard are both good, but Wizards end up being your AOE mage class early on. That’s really handy! Yes, it could mean you’re in danger with some friendly fire, but I didn’t find it to be too much of an issue. Plus, their ranged skills are super helpful! But if you are worried about also hitting allies, just make a Wizard and Witch right away, and train both up equally to help out.
Scrabbit
The Scrabbit is going to be your little stealing friend in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero, as it is one of the best characters for plundering objects from stages due to its high Steal stat and Seed Collecting ability. You also get it incredibly early on, practically after the tutorial stages, so you have a friend to help you get extra items and equipment by Confining during battles right away.
Healer
Once you start hitting your first bosses, you’ll see Phantoms start taking real damage in the field. A Healer helps with that. They can heal characters and revive fallen ones with a Carol. If you equip one with the right items, they might even have some magic spells or other skills that take advantage of the high Intelligence stat to also help deal some damage.
Sniper
There are going to be a lot of situations in which you’ll have enemies very far away that you need to hit. Your best bet for that is to have a Sniper around. The Dexterity stat on this unit is unparalleled, which you need for those types of ranged attacks. However, you can also load them up with skills and abilities that ensure you can hit folks from anywhere. Which is good, because enemies are everywhere on maps. This is a unit that comes up later in the game, however, so feel free to build and use an Archer until it opens up.
Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero is available for the Switch, PS4, and PS5, and eventually the PC.
