Can You Romance Kai in Avowed?

Avowed features several different party members you are able to recruit in the Living Lands, including your first permanent party member in the lovable Kai. With a charming voice that will be familiar to Garrus fans from Mass Effect and other games, you may be wondering if you are able to romance Kai in Avowed or not.

Can You Romance Kai or Other Party Members in Avowed?

If you are smitten with the illustrious and shiny blue Kai, you are not alone. Unfortunately, I don’t have the brightest news for you regarding romance in this fantasy RPG from Obsidian. Despite taking inspiration from certain other action RPGs of the same ilk, there is no true romance to be found here.

In fact, it seems that romance was likely planned at some point but canceled for one reason or another. So, no, you will not be able to fully romance Kai during your time in the Living Lands. While this may be disappointing, it is possible to still spend time with Kai and the other party members you gather during your adventure.

In addition, spoiler alert, but there is one romance-like moment you can get with Kai at the end of the game. If you happen to spend time with him and do his optional questline, you will get a scene just before the final area of the adventure. It is here that you will have the option to suggest a bit of romance in a short conversation. This scene teases romance on the horizon for the two of you; just not actual love in this particular title. But, hey, it’s something at least.

How to Raise Your Friendship With Kai

Though you can’t fully romance Kai, you can still build your friendship with him and the other companions in Avowed. To do this, what you want to do is often set up camp. There are various campsites throughout the Living Lands, but especially outside of major cities like Paradis.

Once you set up camp, you will be able to walk around and interact with the party members. The goal is to exhaust all dialogue options with them to learn more about them and their past. This will give you the chance to train with them and get some stat boosts in the process. Don’t worry about your choices, either. You aren’t punished for making the right or wrong choices when talking to companions, so just say whatever you prefer and you’ll raise your friendship.

Avowed is available right now for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
