Hangyodon 40th Anniversary Events Announced

Sanrio announced several campaigns to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Hangyodon, a mascot with a “mysterious charm” to him. Some special events include a new music video themed cafe, and even an audio to listen to when you can’t fall asleep. [Thanks, PR Times!]

You can actually listen to the Hangyodon sleep video on YouTube. It’s over an hour long, and it consists of quiet, healing music while Hangyodon reads random words at short intervals. The video is quite similar to whispered “trigger word” ASMR videos, which have a similar effect.

A full version of “Mysterious Star,” which is a music video for Hangyodon’s theme song, is also on YouTube. The song has a retro vibe, and focuses on Hangyodon’s more mysterious side. In the music video, we can see him working and living in modern society as a salaryman.

Other campaigns Sanrio announced for the Hangyodon 40th anniversary include a collaboration cafe that’ll run from March 6 to April 20, 2025 in four different cities around Japan. With “hanami” as the main concept, the key visual features Hangyodon and friends sitting under a blooming sakura tree. Village Vanguard will also release goods from March 14, 2025, with items like tote bags. There will also be a pop-up store, as well as limited edition merchandise in the Sanrio stores.

Hangyodon is a Sanrio mascot who debuted in 1985. He’s a nice guy who enjoys making people laugh, and strives to be a hero, though his attempts to do so never really work out. Though he’s not conventionally cute like Cinnamoroll or My Melody, Hangyodon has a large enough fanbase that he was in 8th place in the Sanrio popularity poll in 2022.

The Hangyodon 40th anniversary campaign is underway. Though you can only check out videos right now, stores for this event will start stocking goods from March 2025.
