Tales of Graces f Remastered upholds the long tradition of a good ol’ cameo boss battle, which lets you face off against playable characters or bosses from the previous titles in the franchise. To challenge the past protagonists in a formidable battle, you’ll need to go through a few steps and collect some items.
Cameo battles in Tales games have been around since the early days of the franchise. Hidden character Lilith from Tales of Destiny was a popular choice for the earlier games, appearing even in re-release version of Tales of Phantasia. Later games would introduce some more variety, as well as increase the number of bosses you have to fight.
In Tales of Graces f Remastered, the cameo boss battle is called the Trio of Titans. You’ll need to fight against each cameo character separately before challenging them all at once at Riot Peak. Since you need to access the end-game dungeon Zhonecage to fight Amber (Kohak) and Reala individually, you can’t actually do the cameo battle until you’re near the end of the main story.
Here’s how to unlock the cameo boss battles in Tales of Graces f Remastered
- Amber (Kohak): Find the Lost Anklet, which you can get from the Carta King in Zavhert Port after collecting 40 Magic Carta cards. You can then turn it in the Warrior’s Roost Requests.
- Reala: Find the Hero Staff in the Sandshroud Ruins and turn it in the Warrior’s Roost Requests.
- Veigue: Finish Sidequest 63 – Strange Folk and obtain Requiem. Turn it in the Warrior’s Roost Requests.
Here’s how to fight each cameo character
You can actually fight Veigue without having to go through anything just by clearing the Riot Peak Trials Normal Class. Veigue is fast and annoying, with his Mystic Arte in particular being difficult to deal with. However, he does not have a lot of range going for him, so if you can keep him busy and flank him, you should be alright. As a note, if you don’t defeat Veigue, you won’t unlock the above Requiem Request.
Amber and Reala are a bit more annoying, as you have to find them in the Zhonecage first. As mentioned earlier, the Zhonecage is the endgame dungeon, which means you have to get through the majority of the main story before you can challenge them. Amber is on the third floor and Reala is on the ninth.
Like Veigue, Amber is annoying to deal with. In her case, she’s fast and can combo lock you into oblivion. Another very annoying issue with Amber is that she’ll drop a Magic Carta card…but it’s not a guaranteed drop. So if you want to complete your set, you’ll need to face off against her multiple times. Reala is the same, in which she has long combos and drops a Magic Carta card, but only a percentage of the time. Both Amber and Reala have powerful Mystic Artes which can damage multiple people in your party, so be prepared to guard or evade afterwards and focus on healing.
After you defeat each character separately, you can go back to Riot Peak and challenge the Master Class. If you thought facing them individually was hard, wait until you have to deal with all three at once. This is a great place to flex your skills, though. I remember people uploading themselves defeating this trio with a solo run back when the game was only on PS3.
Who are these guys, anyway?
Of these three characters, Amber is the only character who appeared in a Tales game that a global audience can access. She’s the female protagonist of Tales of Hearts, which originally came out in 2008. In Tales of Hearts, Amber loses her heart and emotions after protagonist Kor (Shing) tried to cure her of a mysterious infection. She spends quite a bit of the game essentially an emotionless doll. Fortunately, with the efforts of Kor, her brother, and their companions, they restore her spiria and she returns to her usual self.
Reala is also the female protagonist of her game, Tales of Destiny 2 (the sequel to Tales of Destiny and not Tales of Eternia). She is a mysterious girl who appears before protagonist Kyle in search of a hero. Though she coldly brushes Kyle off at first, she warms up to him in time as they travel together.
Finally, Veigue is the main protagonist of Tales of Rebirth. For a while, Bandai Namco treated him as a joke, making him yell and scream every time he appeared in events. This is because there are a lot of scenes in his original game focusing on him yelling his childhood friend Claire’s name. Veigue is a cool dude, though, and that’s not a pun on his ice powers. After rescuing his childhood friend, he spends the latter half of the game fighting against racism.
Tales of Graces f Remastered is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.
