On the surface, Longvinterappears to be a cozy-looking title inspired by classics like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. However, upon closer inspection, you will notice many survival gameplay mechanics that radically change the experience. Your goal is to build and maintain a base while ensuring that other players don’t kill you. If you die at any point, whether at the hands of other players or the environmental terrain, you will lose all the items in your active inventory, and it will become fair game for other players to pick up. A good way to stay alive in Longvinter is to maintain your energy bar by eating and cooking various foods.
How Do I Eat Food in Longvinter?
To stay alive in Longvinter, you will want to preserve the energy bars in the bottom right-hand corner. If all nine bars deplete to zero, you will instantly die, and all the items you are actively carrying will drop to the ground. Fortunately, if you die, you do not lose any cash, so in tight situations, you may want to consider selling all your items at a vending machine before you die.
Energy is used in various ways, like participating in activities like swimming, mining, or chopping wood. You can also lose energy by being attacked by wild animals or other players. Because of this, you will always want to keep food on you at all times. You can find food across the open terrain, fishing or hunting animals. Most plant-based foods like carrots or cabbages will be consumable when you pick them up. To eat food, head to your inventory by pressing the Tab key and selecting the food you want. If you hover over the food in the inventory, it will tell you the details of that particular food, such as how much energy it will restore.
How Do I Cook in Longvinter?
You cannot consume food like fish or bird meat unless it is cooked. To prepare them, you’ll want to find a campfire. There are two ways to go about this. The first method is to start a fire yourself by purchasing a “wood and match” at a vending machine for 19mk and then placing it in an open environment.
The second way is to find a preexisting fire that’s already burning. There is always a campfire at the Sgt. Lake outpost, so it could be a good idea to head there. Click on the fire, and you will then have the option to cook several foods at once. If you cook a fish independently, you will get a cooked variant of that food. However, if you input multiple foods into the fire, you will get a brand-new dish, which will heal more energy points and sometimes give you additional perks. To see what recipes you have unlocked so far, head to the compendium from the inventory. There are 46 recipes, so don’t be scared to experiment with the food you collect.
Longvinter is now available on PC.
