How to Find and Beat Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds‘ Nu Udra hunt is one of the game’s tougher, even in low-rank environments. The fiery beast seems harmless enough in its standard form, but once flames erupt across its body, Nu Udra becomes much faster and deadlier.

Our Monster Hunter Wilds Nu Udra guide breaks down Nu Udra’s weaknesses and what you get from hunting it.

Where Do I Find Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The first time you hunt Nu Udra, you only get the vague guidance that it’s “under the Everforge.” Most things in Oilwell Basin are under the Everforge, so if you’re having trouble tracking it down, head over to our Black Flame location guide.

For future hunts after the initial scripted quest, you can expect to find Nu Udra in Oilwell Basin’s lowest regions, the ones where lava covers the ground. Look specifically in areas 14 and 16.

Once you complete the game’s campaign and reach chapter four, you won’t be able to hunt Nu Udra again for a while. On the rare chance it does turn up while you’re exploring Oilwell Basin’s high-rank version, Alma will remind you that you don’t have permission from the guild to hunt it. That changes once you reach the second part of chapter five, “Scorching the Earth Once More,” which unlocks along with the quests that let you hunt high-rank Rey Dau and Uth Duna. After that, you can hunt Nu Udra any time it shows up in the wild or force it to appear by taking on the optional quest “Sinister Sneer.”

How Do I Beat Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds?

As you’d likely expect from a giant monster covered in oil that sets itself on fire, Nu Udra is resistant to fire damage and weak to water. Bench the fire weapons, and if you haven’t forged weapons with water elemental alignment, you might want to do that before taking Nu Udra on. Uth Duna weapons are your best bet during the story campaign, but by the time you reach chapter five, you’ll have access to water element trees for several weapons, including the Dual Blades.

Mobility is important in this battle, as Nu Udra moves quickly once it ignites itself. The Dual Blades, Long Sword, and Hammer all allow for better, faster movement, though weapons with shields – the Sword and Shield, Gunlance, and Lance – work effectively as well. If the battle feels too overwhelming, consider bringing along the Bow or Heavy Bowgun as a secondary weapon, so you can fire off water ammo from a safe distance. Bring Nulberries to counteract burn effects as well.

Nu Udra’s standard form relies on close-range attacks. It’ll swipe at you with its tentacles, do a little twirly attack with its whole body, and sometimes slam its entire weight on you. The latter attack has a lengthy animation before Nu Udra’s body lands, though, so you should have enough time to get away. Nu Udra adds fire attacks to its arsenal once it ignites itself, including a flamethrower attack and a more dangerous attack where the monster launches flaming rocks into the air that fall in a random pattern.

What Are the Nu Udra Drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Nu Udra has several drops, many of which are rare, so plan on hunting this monster several times if you want to make gear out of it.

  • Nu Udra hide
  • Nu Udra oilmucus

  • Nu Udra spike (rare reward for carving its arm)
  • Nu Udra tentacle (common reward for carving its arm
