Monster Hunter Wilds‘ Rey Dau hunts are tricky in more ways than one. Not only does this fierce dragon only appear under certain conditions, but it’s faster and deadlier than almost every other enemy you’ll face in Wilds‘ first few chapters.
Our Monster Hunter Wilds Rey Dau guide explains where to find Rey Dau, what its weaknesses are, and what you get for hunting it.
Where Do I Find Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Rey Dau calls the Windward Plains home, the first region you explore in Wilds, but it’s a little more complicated than that. You won’t find this electric dragon on just any expedition. Rey Dau only appears during Sandtide, when the wind and lightning scour the region. There is, as of Monster Hunter Wilds‘ launch, no way to control or change the weather, though if you open the map and select “Environment Overview,” you can see the region’s upcoming conditions.
You can also force a Rey Dau to appear by repeating the optional quest “Sultan in the Sand.” Bear in mind that this quest is locked to Hunter Rank 3, though. You won’t get high-rank materials from this battle, but it’s still worthwhile if you need to complete the low-rank set.
High-rank Rey Dau hunts unlock in chapter five, during the quest “Roaring Rey Dau,” and you can hunt it in the optional high-rank quest “When the Dust Settles.” You need a Hunter Rank of 34 for the story quest.
How Do I Beat Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Rey Dau has a few weak points you can target, though the primary one puts you in a fair bit of danger. The dragon’s head is – as with all large monsters – its main weak area, but you can also target its wings and sever its tail for extra damage.
Severing the tail reduces the likelihood of Rey Dau using its tail thump attack as well, which means you’re a little safer while attacking from behind. The wings are a bit trickier, though, since Rey Dau usually keeps them out of reach. You’ll need a ranged weapon, a larger one such as the lance, or the sword and shield’s jump attack to hit them easily.
Rey Dau takes greater damage from water and ice attacks. Uth Duna is your primary source of water weapons early in Monster Hunter Wilds, and ice only comes from Hirabami hunts when you unlock them later in the main story. You can also bring water and ice ammo for your bow, light bowgun, or heavy bowgun, though.
The main thing to keep in mind is to never stay still if you’re directly in front of Rey Dau’s head at any point. It fires lightning lasers that deal heavy damage to you, and those attacks have far-reaching range. The most potent comes takes a few seconds to charge, so you’ll have time to retreat before Rey Dau launches it. Just make sure you’re watching its behavior during the fight so you’re not caught by surprise.
It’s also worth wearing some lightning-resistant gear so that, if you do get hit, the damage is less severe.
What are the Rey Dau drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Rey Dau drops several bits and pieces.
- Wingtalon
- Thunderhorn
- Shell
- Scale
- Tail
- Certificate
- Plate
High-rank Rey Dau hunts get you the “plus” version of each drop, along with:
Rey Dau Boltgem
- Hardbone
- Hard armor sphere
- Ancient Orb – Sword
- Novacrystal
- Dragonbone Relic
The last two are rare, one-star drops, and you can only get the Rey Dau Plate from carving its severed parts. If you’re after it for the armor set’s coil piece, make sure to target the tail during a hunt. The certificate is required to start forging Rey Dau armor, though in our experience, you’re guaranteed at least one certificate from completing the main story hunt.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S from Feb. 28, 2025.
