Monster Hunter Wilds‘Uth Duna huntsare lengthy affairs, thanks to the leviathan’s unique ability to protect itself from incoming attacks. Exploiting elemental weaknesses is essential in these hunts, so you’ll want to study up before setting out and make sure you leave with the best gear for the job.
Our Monster Hunter Wilds Uth Duna guide explains where to find Uth Duna, what its weaknesses are, and what you get for defeating it.
Where Do I Find Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Uth Duna lives in the waterlogged parts of the Scarlet Forest area, primarily in the region’s northern parts, though it roams as well. Outside the main story quest and side quests that feature Uth Duna as a target, you’re more likely to find it during rainstorms in the forest. There is, as of Monster Hunter Wilds‘ launch, no way to control or change the weather. You can open the map and select “Environment Overview” to see the region’s upcoming conditions, though.
That said, Uth Duna appeared occasionally during sunny days as well. It won’t leave the map if the rain ends while you’re hunting it.
You can also force it to appear in the quests:
- Beyond the Deluge
- Veiled by the Tide
- One Thick Veil
- Tide Overtaking Timber
- A Feast in the Deep
- A World Turned Upside Down
“Beyond the Deluge” is the first low-rank story quest featuring Uth Duna, and “Tide Overtaking Timber” is the first high-rank quest. The latter is a five-star quest that unlocks during chapter five, and you must be at least HR 34 to unlock it. If Uth Duna appears in the wild before that point, Alma will tell you the guild doesn’t authorize you to hunt it.
How Do I Beat Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds?
The most important thing to know about the Monster Hunter Wilds Uth Duna fight is that the creature is weak to lightning and the second is that all your attacks deal reduced damage while the leviathan’s giant fins are billowing about. Lightning attacks deal increased damage even while Uth Duna’s defenses are up, and since the fins only drop after you deal enough damage, exploiting Uth Duna’s elemental weakness is the best way to speed the fight up.
If you’re wondering what the broken blue shield icon is when you attack Uth Duna, it’s Monster Hunter Wilds’ way of telling you that the monster is guarding itself. The icon disappears when Uth Duna’s fins vanish.
Attacking Uth Duna’s weak areas means you’re in the line of fire for most of its attacks. The leviathan’s most common moves are a swipe with its claws and a little biting attack if you’re in front of it. However, it will also do a quick spin, usually when you’re behind it. Its most dangerous attack is where it leaps into the air and crashes into the water with a mighty belly flop. The move deals heavy damage if you’re caught under it, and it also sends a wave of water toward you, which impedes your movement.
Uth Duna’s attacks remain the same after its fins vanish, but it moves more quickly.
Speaking of impeded movement, if any of Uth Duna’s attacks connect with you, there’s a high chance you’ll suffer from Waterblight. Waterblight is an affliction that increases the amount of stamina all your attacks consume. You can clear it by using a Nulberry, but you might want to cook a meal that boosts stamina before starting the hunt anyway.
Given how dangerous it is to attack Uth Duna’s weak points directly, it’s a good idea to take a bow, light bowgun, or heavy bowgun along as your secondary weapon. All three let you target the monster’s weaknesses while maintaining a safe distance. Additionally, if you’re still in the game’s early portions, thunder ammo is the only way to exploit Uth Duna’s elemental weakness at this point.
Uth Duna’s weak points are its:
- Head
- Claws
And you can break its:
- Head
- Forelegs
- Tail
Breaking a part is the only way to get the Uth Duna Cilia drop, so make sure to target these areas.
What are the Uth Duna Drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Completing a low-rank Uth Duna hunt rewards you with:
- Claw (from breaking foreleg)
- Scale
- Tentacle
- Cilia (from breaking tail)
- Hide
- Aqua Sac
- Uth Duna Certificate
- Plate (from breaking tail)
And successfully hunting a high-rank Uth Duna gets you the “plus” version of these items, along with:
- Torrent Sac
- Uth Duna Watergem
- Hard Bone
- Armor Sphere
- Ancient Sphere – Sword
Bear in mind that for low-rank and high-rank hunts, you get the same chance of receiving the same parts if you capture the monster instead.
