Travelling the battlefields of ancient China in Dynasty Warriors: Origins can be a gruelling task, but fortunately, horses can make things a lot easier as you hack and slash your way to peace. There are ten horses to unlock in the game, with half of them requiring special conditions before you can ride them in battle.
How to Unlock All Horses in Dynasty Warriors: Origins
There are two types of horses to unlock in Dynasty Warriors: Origins: normal ones and special ones. You can get normal ones when you reach a certain Peace Level in each province. Meanwhile, special ones unlock once you meet specific conditions in specific battles. Since some special horses are locked behind story routes, you have to play the game multiple times if you want to get all of them.
The normal horses, as well as how to get them, are:
- Birch: Peace Level 1 for Ji Province
- Chestnut: Peace Level 2 for Liang Province
- Mahogany: Peace Level 1 for Jing Province
- Maple: Peace Level 1 for You Province
- Walnut: Default
After you reach Peace Level 1 or 2, you can go to any Waymark in the province to claim your horse.
The special horses are:
- Hex Mark: Finish “Battle of Chibi” with 6 or more allied officers alive (Shu Route)
- Red Hare: Defeat Lu Bu in the Battle of Xiapi without using Meat Buns or Portable Items
- Shadow Runner: Finish “Escape From Wan Castle” while stopping the enemy’s stone barrage (Wei Route)
- Storm Runner: Finish “Battle of Huarong Path” with 7 or more allied officers alive (Wei Route)
To unlock the above special horses, you need to be playing on Ultimate Warrior Difficulty. As a reward for the trouble you go through to get them, though, special horses have much better stats and abilities than your standard horse.
How to Equip Horses
You can equip horses the same way you equip gems or weapons. Open up Battle Preparation, then go to the Equipment tab. Once you’re there, you can equip your horse.
How to Level Up Horses
Horses in Dynasty Warriors: Origins level up when you take them into battles and missions. Keep in mind that random skirmishes do not give experience to your horse. As well, horses do not share experience among each other. If you want to level up a specific mount, you will need to ride it into battle.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is readily available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.
