How to get pets in Fields of Mistria is a straightforward process if you’re an existing player, though newcomers have to wait a little while before they can add a furry family member to their home. It’s worth the wait, though. Having a pet around is, aside from being a source of additional cuteness, an excellent way to cut the grind out of searching for essential materials, leaving you with more time for mining and other pursuits.
Our Fields of Mistria pet guide explains how to get your pet, what they do, and how to customize them.
How to Get Pets in Fields of Mistria
You meet your pet automatically in Fields of Mistria, following a pet dream cutscene. After that, you can customize your pet by choosing a dog or a cat, then their appearance, gender, and name. You can type a name yourself or use a random generator if you’re stuck on deciding. The day ends as usual after the dream, with a summary of any money and renown you earned, and then a new day dawns.
When you leave your home, the pet from your dream will greet you and head inside, having chosen to adopt you. Then you get a brief tutorial explaining how the pet system works in Fields of Mistria.
The pet dream should happen the first night you sleep after installing Fields of Mistria‘s March 2025 update. New players just getting started in their first season will have to wait until the night of Spring 7, however. If you’re keen to get a pet quickly, it’s probably best not to adjust time in Fields of Mistria until after Spring 7.
As of the game’s second major update, you can only have one pet.
How to Customize Pets in Fields of Mistria
Fields of Mistria doesn’t lock you into your pet customization options after the dream. If you decide later that you actually want a brown dog instead of a white one, you can change their appearance at any time from the pet section of the journal. This section is under the animal tab with your other farm animals.
It even lets you swap species, so if you wake up in a cat mood one day, boom, instant cat. Cats and dogs behave the same in Fields of Mistria and perform the same tasks, so you’re not missing out on anything if you opt for one or the other. As you progress in the game, you can also unlock or purchase accessories to dress your pet up with.
What Do Pets Do in Fields of Mistria?
Your dog or cat won’t eat meals or take up resources, but you can pet them, feed them treats, or carry them to deepen their affection for you. You can also assign them tasks via the pet tab in the journal. They can scour the landscape for forageable items, wood, or stone – particularly useful if you’re planning on expansions or new buildings, but have other work to do. They don’t work in the rain, though, so don’t expect any deliveries from your pet when the weather is poor.
