One of the best sub-series of Digimon video game adaptations is the Digimon Story series. These particular games focus not just on the plot of the titles, but also the RPG mechanics. They are generally turn-based adventures with some of the best realizations of the Digital World. If you’ve always wanted to know how to play all of the Digimon Story games, you’re in the right place.
All Digimon Story Games and Platforms, Explained
Ignoring the different versions of individual titles, there are about seven different Digimon Story games available at this time or coming out in the near future. This is a sub-series of the core Digital Monster franchise, focusing on RPG elements. Those who like monster-collecting RPGs with turn-based combat will be right at home with these titles.
Here are all of the seven Digimon Story games to date thus far in release order and their respective platforms on which you are able to play them:
- Digimon Story (Japan), Digimon World DS (West): Nintendo DS
- Digimon Story Sunburst & Moonlight (Japan), Digimon World Dawn & Dusk (West): Nintendo DS
- Lost Evolution (Japan): Nintendo DS
- Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Red & Super Xros Wars Blue (Japan): Nintendo DS
- Cyber Sleuth: PlayStation Vita, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC
- Cyber Sleuth — Hacker’s Memory: PlayStation Vita, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC
- Digimon Story Time Stranger: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC — Releases in 2025
Do You Need to Play Every Digimon Story Game in Order?
With seven games in total and a couple of releases with multiple versions, it can be a bit intimidating getting into the Digimon Story games. That said, I can comfortably say that, with little exception, you are able to play these games in any order you like. You can start with the original DS title if you want, but this isn’t required.
After all, these titles have very little to do with one another and are generally standalone. The only exception to this is the pair of Cyber Sleuth games. For these, I do recommend at least playing some of the original before moving into Hacker’s Memory. Hacker’s Memory is a vastly superior game both gameplay and story-wise, in my opinion, but it helps to see the original.
This is because both titles take place in the same world and timeline, and feature some of the similar characters. However, they tell different stories focusing on mostly separate casts simultaneously. So, it helps to play these games back-to-back. These games are also the best starting point for the quality-of-life features, visuals, and fast-paced combat. Otherwise, you are free to start wherever and play whichever game most interests you.
Digimon Story Time Stranger will release for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC sometime in 2025.
