Like in many Monster Hunter games, Hunter Rank eventually becomes a big deal in Monster Hunter Wilds due to some quests and features being locked behind you continuing to raise it once you head into Chapter 4. This means getting yourself to 15 and beyond becomes critical in earning access to new monsters and stronger gear. However, like most things in life, hard work is typically the best way to better yourself.
Why do I need to raise my Hunter Rank in Monster Hunter Wilds?
For many of the early hours in Monster Hunter Wilds, you don’t really need to worry about your rank. Yes, it matters. But the early campaign between Chapters 1-3 focus on major quests and don’t gatekeep content behind the rank.
It’s only once you hit Chapter 4 that HR becomes important. Once Fabius heads to the Forbidden Lands, there will be new missions that gradually open up access to additional areas like Wyveria and Hollow Wound or new features like Tempered monsters and Artian weapons. You’ll need to get your HR out of the 10s and up past the 20s and 30s to start accessing new hunts, areas, and features.
As an example, when you’re in Chapter 4, you need to reach HR 15 to open up “Investigating the Frenzied Shadow” and unlock Frenzied monsters and the Wounded Hollow location. After that, you need to get your HR to 20 to unlock “Wyvern Sparks and Rose Thorns.” After doing so, Tempered Monsters will begin appearing in locations, you’ll be able to make Artian Weapons from their parts, and you can return to Wyveria.
How do I raise my HR in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Basically, hard work. The absolute best option is to take on sidequests from NPCs. These can be major or minor ones from folks like Alma and Gemma or ones who happen to live in different villages. It’s especially helpful if these end up involving a monster battle and not just returning with some items.
A good example is the “Smithy’s Seal of Quality” quest from Gemma. This involves taking on a requested quest to help her with her forging and creations. You’ll need to hunt a specific Lala Barina in the Forest. You get HR points immediately after the hunt. Then, when you head to a Base Camp and talk to Gemma to check in after it is over, you’ll get additional HR points.
The other option I recommend is taking on Large Monster Optional Quests, Field Surveys, or investigations. Especially Frenzied monsters, as I found these can be quicker fights. Find a monster you’re good at defeating or whose armored bits you want. Beat it up repeatedly. Enjoy the HR you earn in the process.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
