One of the first real choices you can make in Avowed is whether or not to free the smuggler Ilora from her cell. As you might expect there can be consequences for this choice later down the road, so here’s what you need to know before making a decision about Ilora in Avowed.
Should you Help Ilora in Avowed?
When you first come across Ilora she’ll be locked in a cell in Fort Northreach, essentially Avowed‘s tutorial island. Your companion, Garryck, will warn against freeing her since she’s an untrustworthy smuggler, and the dead guard in her cell doesn’t point to her being particularly trustworthy. Despite this, it is largely in your interests to trust and free Ilora as she can help you out and there aren’t really any drawbacks to doing so.
If you do choose to free her, she will help you out in combat for the rest of the Fort Northreach area, as well as provide a bit of lore from a Paradisan perspective. She is especially useful during the boss fight of the area, as she can help keep his attention away from you. If you leave her instead she will break out on her own and attack you during that same boss fight, forcing you to kill them both.
Additionally, Ilora can help you out later on during a quest called Escape Plan. Available after gaining access to the city of Paradis, this quest requires you to negotiate with some smugglers. Being a smuggler herself, Ilora will put in a good word and give you the option to resolve the quest without spilling any blood or spending any more coin.
How to get the Key and Free Ilora in Avowed.
To free Ilora, you’ll need to climb up the platforms in the room to get to the second floor and hop over the gap. Continue round the room until you can climb up to a stone section and grab the bow on a corpse to your left. You can jump back down to the bramble-blocked corridor from here, but don’t do so yet. Instead, turn back to find a breakable floor near where you climbed up. Smash the floor with a weapon and drop into the room to find the key next to an unlockable door. Return to Ilora’s cell to let her bout, but don’t forget you can also unlock the cell next to her for a short path to another small treasure.
Avowed launches on February 18, 2025, for PC and Xbox Series X/S as well as on Xbox Game Pass. An early access period is currently ongoing for those who bought the Premium Edition.
