Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Square Enix’s new Nintendo 3DS RPG, was last week’s big release in Japan, and it came out the gate with 141,529 copies sold in its first week. That’s a great debut for a new franchise, and it’s even better when you compare it to first-week sales of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light.

Released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light sold 114,714 copies in its first week. Bravely Default, which looks like something of a spiritual successor, outselling it without the help of the Final Fantasy brand is quite something. Congratulations to producer, Tomoya Asano, and writer, Naotaka Hayashi, on a brand new game!

The other Nintendo 3DS role-playing game that released last week was Namco Bandai’s Project X Zone, the strategy RPG that features characters from Capcom, Namco Bandai and Sega franchises. Project X Zone sold 85,539 copies in its first week.

Things didn’t go quite as well for Time and Eternity: Toki Towa, however. That game sold a mere 32,000 copies, joining Sol Trigger as another recent Imageepoch-developed game with sales on the low side.
