Last week Japan went through Obon, which is basically the Japanese Día de Muertos that lasts several days, so there weren’t any new releases in the top-20 which was mostly dominated by Switch games. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of August 13 through August 19, 2018.

The top spot of the week went to Minecraft which sold 25,948 units on Switch to take the #1 spot for a huge leap coming from #7 last week. I was pretty certain the top of the week would’ve gone to last week’s #2 Splatoon 2 but it ended up getting second place again with 24,188 units sold during the Obon week.

At #3 we have Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun with 21,109 units sold on the Switch, followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at #4 with 20,346 copies sold on Switch. Next up at #5 we have a combo-breaker with a 3DS title, WarioWare Gold with 20,142 units sold, which is pretty impressive to see these days.

The rest going down are all Switch games until Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon at #11 with 8,447 units sold on 3DS, and Yakuza 3’s PS4 remaster at #14 with 6,753 units sold in the week. 17 of 20 title in the top-20 are Switch and 3DS titles, so Nintendo enjoyed a fruitful Obon holiday.

In hardware sales, we saw some big increases including the PlayStation 4 which saw a healthy 3k increase with 20,911 units sold in the week. Together with the PS4 Pro’s 4,932 units, the PS4 family sold 25,843 units total. The Nintendo Switch, however, was the best-selling console with 54,647 units sold to make up for 57.2% of all hardware sales. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 4,803,768 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.
