Yasumi Matsumo revealed that he’s been sitting on a story treatment for Vagrant Story 2 for about 20 years now. He did so when chatting with fans on Twitter about his recent scenario in Final Fantasy XIV, which itself was a continuation of the game’s Return to Ivalice story. Some cheeky comments got a bit out of hand, but the conversation continued. Matsumo dropped a whole prologue for Vagrant Story 2, introducing a new protagonist. It was only in Japanese, but has since been translated by Stefan B.K. [Thanks, Stefan!]
It probably goes without saying, but if you’re interested in Vagrant Story, there are likely what constitute as spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk!
First, here is the original tweet from Matsumo, in which a fan asked an innocent question and got a breaking Vagrant Story 2 news bomb in return:
It's someone else.
well… I put only a prologue in the proposal I wrote before.
( I can't translate it in my poor English, so plz do it ! ) pic.twitter.com/oOaHSnsn5U— 松野泰己 (@YasumiMatsuno) April 22, 2020
Then, take a look at the translation-slash-localization from Stefan B.K.
Vagrant Story 2's prologue by Matsuno, localized as best I could in the style of the original game. これでどうでしょう?ちょっと派手にしすぎたかしら? pic.twitter.com/T4CPFG83du

It’s important to not consider this a hopeful lead-in to a sequel announcement. Matsuno did post a goofy “just wait and see!” sort of message around this time, but nothing beyond that. Square Enix is certainly full of surprises, and Ivalice has consistently been present in Final Fantasy since the original Final Fantasy Tactics.
Vagrant Story was only ever released for the PlayStation, but it is available as a PSOne Classic for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation Vita.
