Last week in Japan, it was quite the busy one with four new major releases that included Dynasty Warriors 9, Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet, Shadow of the Colossus, and Dragon’s Crown Pro. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of February 5 through February 11, 2018.

The #1 spot of the week goes once again to Monster Hunter: World, for a third week in a row, with 159,613 units sold on PS4 with an updated total of 1,750,969 units sold in Japan since its release last month. Dynasty Warriors 9 followed at #2 with 117,495 units sold on PS4. Its predecessor Dynasty Warriors 8 sold 203,224 units on PS4 back in March 2013.

#3 is another new title in Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet which sold 75,623 units on PS4. It performed better than the previous SAO game, Accel World VS Sword Art Online: Millennium Twilight, which debuted with 70,669 units sold (38,653 on PS Vita and 32,016 on PS4). However, it’s quite a drop when compared to previous standalone Sword Art Online titles. You can see how they compare below:

  • (2013) Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment – 138,180 (PSP)
  • (2014) Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment – 145,029 (PS Vita)
  • (2015) Sword Art Online: Lost Song – 139,298 (PS Vita)
  • (2016) Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization 140,519 (70,871 PS4|69,458 PSV)

At #4 we have Splatoon 2 with 23,461 units sold, which now puts the game at 2,021,028 units sold, making it the first Nintendo Switch title to hit the 2 million milestone in Japan.

To give you an idea, here’s how Splatoon 2 stacks against other major Nintendo games:

As you can see in the above chart provided by our good friend Ishaan, the 2.02 million units sold at retail is just shy of passing Super Mario 3D Land, the highest-selling 3D Mario game of all time in Japan.

Shadow of the Colossus charted at #5 in its debut with 21,900 units sold on PS4. And lastly for new releases in the top-20, Dragon’s Crown Pro sold 11,691 units on PS4 to chart at #11 in the week.

As for console sales, the PlayStation 4 was the top-selling hardware of the week with 59,691 units. Combined with the PS4 Pro’s 11,615, that’s a total of 71,306 sold. The Nintendo Switch sold 43,404 units, which now puts it at 3,677,551 units sold in Japan since its debut last March, going by Media Create’s numbers.
