Last week, Japan didn’t see any notable new releases, but what it had was more like a race to see who can finish 2016 on top for bragging rights. Here’s the latest from Japanese sales tracker, Media Create, with a look at software and hardware sales from the week of December 26, 2016 through January 1, 2017.

It comes as no big surprise to see Pokémon Sun & Moon finish the year at #1 with 90,891 copies sold in the last week of 2016. Super Mario Maker managed to stick close last week but ended up placing #2 with 73,002 copies sold. Meanwhile, Momotaro Dentetsu 2017 with 63,577 units sold managed to overtake the #3 position from Yo-kai Watch 3 Sukiyaki that placed #4 with 49,350 units sold.

Final Fantasy XV took advantage of Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition and Miitopia’s pace drop to claim #5 with 30,381 units sold in the week. As far as hardware sales go, they dropped for obvious reasons being the week prior was Christmas week, so we’ll likely continue seeing numbers drop down on average in the coming weeks in both hardware and software sales, but probably nothing too drastic, as kiddies will likely have some otoshidama to spend on games Santa forgot to bring them.
