What Are the Hero Canon Names in Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster

In JRPGs, and honestly games in general, we often get to name the protagonist. However, these titles tend to also have “canon” names for characters that would be the default. Depending on the developer, that name might not actually appear as an option or be mentioned anywhere. There are canon character names for each hero in Suikoden 1 and Suikoden 2 HD Remaster, even though the default options don’t come up in the name entry screen, so here’s what they are if you want to be all official.

What is the canon hero name in Suikoden HD Remaster?

In this entry, we know quite a bit about the hero! He’s a young man living in the Scarlet Moon Empire. His father is General Teo McDohl. So even right away, we know that whoever this person is, his last name is McDohl. His canon name in-game is “Tir.”

However, Konami did also have the character go by another moniker to make things easier back in the old PlayStation days of save files on cartridges. You can unlock him in Suikoden 2. When you do, he’ll go by his last name. So in that game, if you access the save, he’ll be called McDohl.

So for the first Suikoden game, going with Tir is best, but even McDohl works.

What is the canon hero name in Suikoden 2 HD Remaster?

In the case of the sequel, the canon name is a little better known. Part of this is due this entry’s popularity. Since the hero is an orphan, we don’t know his last name. We just know Genkaku adopted him after his family died in the war. Konami noted the official canon name for the Suikoden 2 hero is Riou.

But… there’s also another “however” here. An official manga adaptation of Suikoden 2 exists called Genso Suikoden II: Hiki Sakareshi Shukusei. In that adaptation, the hero is named Tao.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars will come to the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on March 6, 2025. The original games appeared on the PlayStation worldwide. They also appeared together in a collection on the PSP in Japan.
