Dynasty Warriors Origins is a reminder to many that the musou genre is alive and kicking. Omega Force’s new entry in its central series is a reimagined take on the usual mission-based classic. Players can traverse a world map to the next mission, participating in minor skirmishes along the way, and restore peace in every province by doing so. Players can also find and collect easy-to-miss items like Old Coins on the world map. These become available before you’re able to make active use of them. As a result, some players might be wondering what to do with old coins in Dynasty Warriors Origins. Here’s a quick explanation of what they’re for, when you’ll get to use them, and how to obtain them.

What to Do With Old Coins in Dynasty Warriors Origins

If you see any old coins while exploring the world map, pick them up immediately. Although you can’t utilize them until Chapter 2, it’s a good idea to stockpile as many as you can before then. The beginning of Chapter 2 will introduce you to several helper characters. These characters unlock additional features and mechanics for you to use. Among them is Sima Hui, owner of the Shui Jing Retreat, where you can check the status of your bonds with other warriors. Sima Hui will explain that old coins, while no longer valid currency, are still given to others as a token of appreciation or affection. He will then ask you to hand over any old coins you find on your travels, in exchange for rewards.

If you’ve ever played Dragon Quest before, old coins are going to be incredibly familiar to you. They are Dynasty Warriors Origins’ version of mini medals. After turning in a certain amount, Sima Hui will bestow you with a gift in return. The amount of old coins you turn in is cumulative. Each reward is given for surpassing a specific milestone total. Rewards for collecting old coins range from large bonuses of money, to extra pyroxene stones for gem crafting, to unique accessories with special effects. Old coin rewards increase in value and rarity the more you collect. Be sure to scour the map for them whenever possible!

Here’s a list of every old coin milestone reward, and how many old coins you’ll need to receive them:

  • 5 – 1000 gold
  • 10 – Ravenous Spirit Amulet
  • 20 – Pyroxene 10
  • 40 – 10000 gold
  • 70 – Pyroxene 20
  • 100 – Amulet of Fortune
  • 140 – 30000 gold
  • 180 – Amulet of Merit
  • 230 – Pyroxene 50
  • 280 – Amulet of Means
  • 350 – Pyroxene 100
  • 400 – Musou Bond
  • 450 – Panacea
  • 500 – War God’s Sash

How to Find Old Coins in Dynasty Warriors Origins

Old coins will reveal themselves on the world map when you get near them. They’ll emit a sparkling ray of light as you get closer. Towards the end of Chapter 1, you’ll obtain the Eyes of the Sacred Bird ability. This will enable you to sense hidden items on the map by holding down the left trigger (or Q on mouse/keyboard.) Using this ability will reveal Old Coin locations from further away, so it’s a good idea to use it when entering a new section of the map. Sometimes old coins can be received by advancing your bond with the various officers in the game as well.

In addition to picking them up on the map and advancing bonds, old coins are also rewards for completing officer requests. During your playthrough, faction officers will appear on the world map and ask for your assistance. In exchange for your help, they’ll give you a variety of items, including old coins. Each old coin location on the map confers one old coin, but requests typically give three at a time. Keep an eye out for officers on the map looking for help! Try to collect as many old coins as you can as often as you can, as the benefits their rewards provide will definitely suffer from diminished returns the further into your playthrough you get.

Dynasty Warriors Origins, like other musou titles, is full of powerful heroes you’ll have the chance to play as.
