For most campaign quests in Monster Hunter Wilds, the game will show you a clear indicator on the map to highlight where to go, but for the “Long-forgotten Flame” Chapter 2 objective “Search for The Black Flame,” there’s no hint as to where it is. This is because it’s forcing you into some old-school footwork, like back in Monster Hunter World or older titles. You actually need to hunt down a clue to find where the Apex Predator for the Basin region is.
How do I search for The Black Flame and find where it is in Monster Hunter Wilds?
So after finishing the “Hunt the Ajarakan” part of the “Long-forgotten Flame” Chapter 2, you’ll see the teaser for The Black Flame. That’s the Apex Predator for the Basin. It only appears rarely later in the game, and will only appear during the campaign as part of this scripted quest.
The key here is to head down into the Basin itself. You have to find a certain piece of evidence you can interact with by pressing the correct button to trigger its appearance on the map. Head to Area 13 on the lowest level of the map. There’s an area near a river with a suspicious puddle of black gunk. That’s what you want to interact with. A Flashfly is right nearby. I marked where the exact position is on the map.
Once you interact with that, you’ll see The Black Flame pop up on the map. It’ll be in the lava-filled Area 15. Make sure you have Cool Drinks on-hand. Once you’re ready, you can run over and kick off the final major quest of this area.
Here’s the exact spot where you will find The Black Flame when you search for it in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
