Where to Find the Bakemono Yokai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows features a series of side quests where Naoe and Yasuke investigate yokai sightings. These quests all require a little bit of detective work to reveal the real truth behind the folk tales. The first of these quests involves a bakemono, a creature that takes on the form of a melon.

How to Unlock Yokai Quests

The yokai quests can be unlocked in the Yamashiro region. If you’re keeping up with world rumors, this may already appear on your map (this is how I found it), but if not, here’s where to find it.

East of Kyoto, there is a region known as the Halls of Meeting, and in this region you can find the Nyoji Daiji Temple. This is found directly east of the Nijo Tenshu Viewpoint in Kyoto, at roughly the halfway point between the Kiyomizudera Pagoda and Pagoda of the Hills Viewpoints in the Halls of Meeting region.

At the temple, you’ll meet a man named Mamushi, a yokai hunter who’s become jaded with his job. So he hands it over to you to do, giving you a selection of yokai to investigate. These range in difficulty but for this guide we’ll be focusing on the lowest level quest, the bakemono.

How to Find the Bakemono Yokai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The bakemono yokai is found in the Suika Lands location in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, unless you’ve been obsessive about filling in the map, it’s unlikely you’ll have encountered this place. The only clues you have are that it’s in the northern Yawata Plains in Settsu.

If you have scouts available, you can send them to investigate. Find Yawata Plains on the eastern part of Settsu. Now place your scouts next to the river north of the sub-region name.

To get to the Suika Lands, whether you’ve found the quest marker with scouts or not, head to the Bamboo Cutters Watchtower fast travel point and climb down the cliffs through the forest to the west. Once you’re out of the trees, turn to the north to find a road. Follow this road north. It will take a while, but there are few alternate routes and the road will take you directly to the Suika Lands.

When you get close, a new clue will appear: the bakemono only appears in summer or fall. So make sure to change the season accordingly.

How to Defeat the Bakemono Yokai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Despite how remote and hard to find they are, the bakemono are revealed to not be yokai at all, but they are still strange. You can intervene in their argument and are given a choice of melon. Pick the one you prefer, and you’ll enter a duel with the other one. The choice doesn’t really matter here, so pick whichever makes sense to you.

The duel isn’t difficult. Your opponent is a standard sword-wielding enemy, so use the usual sword fighting tactics you would use elsewhere in the game. Parry, dodge and strike when you get your chance. He doesn’t have much health either, so this won’t be a long battle. Don’t worry, despite using your standard weapons, you won’t kill them. Instead, you just gain the satisfaction of defending your favorite type of melon and 2,000 XP.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows now available for PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S.
