Where to Find the Butterfly Quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The quest giver for the Assassin’s Creed Shadows origami butterflies quest can be found in Katano. This is the small town that can be found to the east of Tomoki’s Homestead, next to the castle of the same name.

You can find the quest giver next to the Ornament Vendor, south of the Katano Kakurega. This is a nameless woman who talks about the fun of children’s games and mentions a game about finding hidden origami butterflies. She asks if you’d like to play and instructs you to find ten of them. The only clues she provides are that they are all within Osaka and they’re all found on trees.

Where Are the Ten Origami Butterflies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Finding the ten origami butterflies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows requires good observation, as there are no other clues aside from them all being on trees. You can make use of the Observe mechanic to find blue dots in the area marking them, but this has limited range so unless you collect them close together, the markers may not be immediately obvious.

Here are all the locations of the butterflies in order of where you can find them coming in from Katano:

In the eastern section, closest to the castle, find the junction between two rivers. The butterfly tree is at this junction.

Still in the eastern section, next to the bridge across the dividing river just north of the Osaka Kakurega.

Southeast of the second butterfly, in the southernmost block of the eastern section, the butterfly is in the back yard of a house.

In the block just north of the Gear Vendor, this butterfly is inside a courtyard.

On the west side of town, at the crossroads west of the southern bridge to Kojo Ruins.

Just north of the Temple of Osaka, right in the center of town.

Just southwest of the Temple of Osaka, there is a shrine. The butterfly tree can be found behind it.

South of the Kakurega, there is a thick cluster of bushes next to the river. The tree can be found surrounded by these bushes.

Southern edge of town, roughly east of the Fisherman’s District. You can find the tree next to a meat vendor.

Behind a stable in the southwest corner of town.

Where to Find Butterfly Collector Shucho

As you collect the origami butterflies, you’ll find messages referring to a criminal ring. It’s now up to you to take out the members of this criminal ring. You’ll find a crying child near the last butterfly. Speak to her and the first of your targets, Shucho, will make her appearance just down the road from the stable. Fortunately, she’s standing by a bush so sneak into it and take her out silently.

Where to Find Butterfly Collector Mucho

A quest marker will appear by Kojo Ruins. Head over the bridge and you’ll find your target talking to a child. As you approach, she will flee. Speak to the child to reassure them, then give chase to your target.

Travel down the path just north of where the child is standing, and you’ll see a group of burnt-down buildings on the right. Look for the house that’s still mostly intact, and Mucho can be found hanging around outside the front entrance. I was able to sneak up on her by crawling through the grass at the side of the building. Once she’s dealt with, return to the child and you’ll be able to walk him home.

Where to Find Butterfly Collector Richo

Richo’s a trickier one to find. Head to the northern part of Osaka and find the burnt-down buildings here. Approach the well and you’ll hear two people discussing a woman in a bamboo forest. This forest is found north of Noda Village, which itself is north of Osaka Castle. Trek all the way up there and enter the forest.

The forest is dense, but Richo’s hideout isn’t difficult to find. There is a path in the middle of the forest, and heading east along this path will bring you to her shed. She’s sitting outside and will attack you on sight, although the bamboo does provide decent cover for stealth tactics. Defeat her before unlocking the shed and freeing the child inside. Walk her home.

Where to Find Butterfly Collector Kacho

With the other three butterfly collectors taken out, you should have collected clues for a hideout and a paper merchant. Visiting both of these will give you the location of Kacho, the leader of the group. The hideout is a large shed in the block southwest of the Temple of Osaka, while the paper merchant is inside a shop covered in umbrellas southwest of the Gear Vendor.

Visiting these places reveals that Kacho is in Nishinomaru Garden, in the neighborhood immediately west of Osaka Castle. This is a heavily guarded location, but fortunately, Kacho’s home is near the outer wall. You can find it on the western corner of the Garden, with butterflies in the garden. Sadly, stealth tactics are out here, as approaching Kacho activates a cutscene and a fight.

With all the origami butterflies found and the Butterfly Collectors taken out, you can now return to the quest giver in Katano. Speak to her, and she reveals that she was also a member of the gang. You can choose to kill her or spare her, depending on how you feel about her decisions. Sparing her will reward you with a unique Trinket.
