NetEase has recently announced that the remaining two members of the Fantastic Four, The Thing and The Human Torch, will be joining the Marvel Rivals roster on February 21, 2025. These new additions will expand the character roster to 37, which is an impressive amount of superheroes when you consider every character has a very distinct playstyle. Let alone the fact that the game has only been out for a handful of months. February 21, 2025, also symbolizes when the first season of Marvel Rivals will officially hit the halfway mark. But there have been some massive U-turns about what will exactly happen on that date.
Will My Rank Reset Mid Season in Marvel Rivals?
The short answer to that question is no. All players will keep their ranks and points when the second half of the season starts. Gold-ranked players will receive a custom reward, whereas players who are in Grandmaster or above will earn Crests of Honors.
However, this was not initially the case. When NetEase released their Dev Talk Vol.10, they announced that ranks would be locked in at the halfway point.
The Dev Talk Vol.10 stated: “After careful observation and consideration, we have concluded that players’ ranks during the first half of Season 1 are the best indicator of their competitive skills within the season.“
This announcement was met with a lot of criticism and resistance from the community online. Within 24 hours, NetEase reverted the decision to reset ranks. The new Dev Diaries, Vol.11, went into detail about how they received a lot of feedback regarding the amount of pressure this would put on players.
It’s easy to see why this decision was changed. Sometimes, the fun of an online game that includes a rank system like Overwatch or League of Legends is trying to see how far you can climb in a reasonable time frame, independently or with friends and then comparing that to prior seasons to see how much you have improved.
Ultimately, this was a good decision for the longevity of the game, and it’s great to see that NetEase is listening to its player base and actively adapting to criticism when proposed. How do you feel about the recent U-turn? Let us know with a comment below!
