The fun thing about the Palico in the Monster Hunter series is that Capcom often plays around and lets us dress them in cute, funny, and weird outfits when you use full equipment sets, and Monster Hunter Wilds might just offer the best one yet. The new Nu Udra cephalopod monster debuts as an Apex Predator in the Basin region. It also lets us bring Octo-Cat to life. Which means, in some ways, that a Nu Udra Palico isjust too cool.
A number of the Palico Equipment sets in Monster Hunter Wilds let our Felyne companion cosplay as other characters. The Felyne Conga set makes it look like one of those wind-up monkeys that bangs cymbals together. The Felyne Doshaguma and Ajarakan sets feature flowing manes and resemble the monsters. But the Felyne Nu Udra turns it into an octopus with cat ears.
Now, part of what makes the Felyne Nu Udra the best Monster Hunter Wilds Palico equipment is the visual effect. It ends up looking exactly like the marine creature. There are six tentacles if you forge the lower-half Felyne Udra Tentacles. These flail about as your Felyne moves, making it look like each one is propelling the critter across surfaces. The Felyne Udra Head has the same slitted eyes as an octopus and the bulbous back of the head, which has physics applied to it that bob and sway as the cat moves. The only feline features are two pointed ears, which fit in seamlessly.
The lower half only requires Nu Udra Hide and can be forged immediately after facing the Basin Apex predator in Chapter 2. Which is pretty great, seeing as how it adds 18 defense and offers some fire resistance. The Felyne Nu Udra Head requires you to push a bit further into the game. While you’ll likely have the Nu Udra Horn from The Black Flame fight in Chapter 2, you also need a Guardian Pelt often dropped by Wyveria Guardian monsters to make it. That has 17 defense and also offers fire resistance. So even at Low Rank, it’s a pretty viable suit for your buddy.
The visual that stems from using both at once is just so good.
The only thing that’s almost as satisfying is to mix it up with another Basin-region piece of Palico Equipment. If you defeat the Rompopolo and get its beak as a drop, you can make the F Rompopolo Brain helmet for your furry friend. This turns your Palico’s head into a pink, cat head-shaped brain in a green, glowing jar. Given how the base of it looks, it ends up looking like it is grafted onto the tentacles when paired with the Felyne Udra Tentacles. You can forge it right away, since it doesn’t require any additional equipment, and it nets your Palico 14 points of defense and 1 point of Dragon resistance.
If you’re into Monster Hunter as a series for its occasional goofiness and dress-up capabilities, then I definitely recommend the Felyne Nu Udra set as one of the best Monster Hunter Wilds Palico Equipment options. It’s just so much fun. Even if you only opt to use part of it, it can make your runs much sillier.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
